Escaping to California during the long, dreary winter months sounds like a perfect idea. And it is! But this won’t be a typical beach vacation. Read on for a few important details that will help you get the most out of your visit to Monterey County during our cool, rainy season.
The Winter Season in Monterey County
- Typically winter is the “rainy season”, lasting from about November – March. Snow is rare but sometimes visible on distant peaks.
- Temperatures range from a high of about 60 degrees to around 40 degrees overnight on the coast and about 5-10 degrees warmer on average as you travel inland. I grew up with a four season climate, and I still think the chill off Monterey Bay can feel intense!
- In addition to cooler temperatures and moisture, high winds topple trees more often during winter—which can leave businesses without electricity.
- Tourist traffic is typically lighter in winter, especially after the holidays. This continues until mid-March, or around Spring Break season. However, some winter weekends still have events, so be sure to check a reliable local events calendar like these from Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea.
- Fewer visitors mean businesses can have unpredictable winter hours. Be sure to call ahead!
- Instead of a “white” Christmas, Monterey County turns a beautiful, vibrant green during rainy winters. Eucalyptus trees are scattered throughout the county. As they open in the cool moisture, take a deep breath!
- Look for persimmons, artichokes and Dungeness crab on local menus, as they are in-season.
Highlights of Winter in Monterey County
Hiking
Whether you’re working up a sweat in Big Sur or enjoying a casual stroll in Pacific Grove, Monterey County comes alive with beautiful greenery and flowers in the winter. Many coastal trails, like the terrific Garrapata State Park, feature hidden waterfalls and babbling brooks that only come alive in the wetter months.
Al Fresco Dining
Grab a coat and a cozy scarf and enjoy eating outdoors at one of Monterey County’s best restaurants. From casual brewpubs like Peter B’s in Monterey to Vesuvio’s romantic rooftop dining and cocktails, there are so many delicious places to eat with terrific, heated outdoor patios.
Packing for Winter in Monterey County
Even though it’s California, be prepared for a chill in the air and potential drizzle. If you plan to be out and about before about 11 am and after about 5 pm, you will most likely have a chilly and damp experience, especially the closer you get to the coast.
However, winter afternoons can be sunny and unseasonably warm. If you’re traveling away from the ocean, the temperature will get much warmer. Visitors to the Salinas Valley should also be prepared for high winds starting in late morning/early afternoon.
Below are a few items I recommend folks pack when visiting in winter:
- Lightweight or medium-weight winter coat/puffer
- a packable version is very helpful as the weather fluctuates throughout the day/as you pass through microclimates
- Hat/umbrella/raincoat
- If you’re near the coast, the winter months will bring dampness on most days.
- If your visit takes you further inland, trade the umbrella for sunglasses to shield from sun and wind.
- Large scarf, pashmina
- A great way to stay warm, but more mobile, while dining outdoors.
- Water-resistant shoes
- Excellent for hiking or excursions like a whale watching tour
